Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Manila, St Helena, London -- merchants and maritime companies across the globe contributed to a fund that would, by June 1843, amount to 1,479 pounds, three shillings, and ninepence. They were paying to keep ships alive. The waters off Cape Agulhas, Africa's true southern tip, had been swallowing vessels for centuries, and every captain who survived the passage knew that a lighthouse here was not a luxury but a necessity. When the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was finally completed in December 1848, its builders had drawn inspiration from one of the ancient world's greatest engineering achievements: the Pharos of Alexandria.
