The Taino people had lived on this land for centuries before the Spanish arrived. What Ponce de Leon built here was not a beginning in any absolute sense, but a displacement - the start of colonial rule imposed on a society that already existed, already farmed, already governed itself. The ruins of his stone house, now a U.S. National Historic Landmark, preserve both sides of that story.
