The Canatuan mine operated from 2004 to 2014, extracting gold, silver, copper, and zinc from an open pit on the southern island of Mindanao. By the time the ore was depleted, the mountain had yielded approximately 100,000 ounces of gold, generated royalty payments and employment for some Subanon families, and provoked protests from others who saw the mine as a violation of their sacred land and ancestral rights.
