That fact alone should signal that this is not the Brazil of postcards. Sitting at 1,628 meters above sea level in the Serra da Mantiqueira, one of the country's highest mountain ranges, Campos do Jordao holds the title of Brazil's highest city. Winters bring frost, temperatures that have plunged as low as minus 7.3 degrees Celsius, and a flood of tourists from Sao Paulo who come to experience something almost unheard of in tropical Brazil: genuine cold.
