They were all praying. On 11 December 2018, just after 1:25 in the afternoon, Mass was underway at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception in Campinas, a city of over a million people in the state of São Paulo. Five men -- ranging in age from 38 to 84, some of them there with family -- would not leave the cathedral alive. Four others were wounded.
