The Armenian-born oil magnate who settled in Lisbon spent decades assembling what he considered a perfectly curated collection -- not the largest, not the most comprehensive, but the finest individual pieces he could acquire. Some came from the Soviet sale of Hermitage paintings, when Stalin's government quietly liquidated masterworks for foreign currency. Of the roughly six thousand items in the museum's holdings, only about a thousand are displayed at any time. Each one earned its place by meeting Gulbenkian's exacting standard, and the result is a museum where every room contains at least one work that would be the centerpiece of any other institution.
