Where Three Hundred Thousand Wings Descend: Introduction

More than 300,000 ducks and 100,000 geese pour into these wetlands each winter, a spectacle no human witness can confirm firsthand -- because Butte Sink Wildlife Management Area is closed to the public. There are no visitor centers, no boardwalks, no interpretive signs. The 18,000 acres that sprawl across the borders of Colusa, Butte, and Sutter Counties exist for the birds, and for the birds alone. In a state where 95 percent of the Central Valley's original wetlands have been drained, paved, or plowed under in the last century, Butte Sink is something rare: a landscape defined by what was deliberately not done to it.

Butte Sink spreads across the flat valley floor at the junction of Colusa, Butte, and Sutter Counties. From altitude, the area appears as a patchwork of shallow wetlands, flooded fields, and tule marsh amidst the agricultural grid of the Sacramento Valley. During winter months, massive waterfowl flocks may be visible wheeling above the wetlands. The Sutter Buttes -- the distinctive volcanic formation often called the world's smallest mountain range -- rise approximately 10 miles to the southeast, providing a useful visual landmark. Nearby airports include Yuba County Airport (KMYV) approximately 15nm east and Colusa County Airport (O08) approximately 15nm west. Sacramento Executive Airport (KSAC) lies roughly 50nm to the south.
