Aeneas himself supposedly visited, fresh from the destruction of Troy, and found a miniature replica of the city he had fled -- complete with a tiny Scamander river and a mock Scaean Gate. The literary flourish was wishful, but the archaeological reality beneath the Albanian oaks is no less improbable. Butrint sits on a hill overlooking the Vivari Channel in southern Albania, 14 kilometers from Saranda and a short ferry ride from Corfu. Beneath its canopy of holm oaks and laurels lie ruins spanning twenty-five centuries -- Greek theater, Roman forum, Byzantine basilica, Venetian fortress -- stacked so densely that digging into one period means cutting through another.
