Candi Bumiayu -- the Bumiayu temple compound -- is one of the few Hindu temple ruins ever found on Sumatra, an island whose ancient religious architecture was long assumed to be almost entirely Buddhist. Situated near the banks of the Lematang River about 120 kilometers west of Palembang, these thirteen structures tell a more complicated story: of a kingdom where Hinduism and Buddhism coexisted, of trade networks that linked this riverbank to Song dynasty China, and of a faith that shifted over centuries without ever quite abandoning the ground it was built on.
