It began as a few extra rooms tacked onto a monastery for a king who liked to take walks on his minister's property. What emerged over seven years of improvised construction was a sprawling complex of more than twenty buildings, two great plazas, and acres of gardens and ponds on the eastern edge of Madrid. It housed some of the finest paintings in Europe, hosted the spectacles of the Spanish Golden Age, and was destroyed so thoroughly that today most visitors walk through its former grounds without knowing a palace was ever there.]]></description>
