That was the plan: two companies of a hundred soldiers each, dispatched from Madras in 1685, instructed to build a fort "as strong as any in India" at a town whose leaders had welcomed the East India Company. Whether by accident or design -- the record is ambiguous -- the ships sailed past Pryaman and landed further south at Bencoolen, near the mouth of an unremarkable river on Sumatra's southwestern coast. It was a mistake the Company would spend 140 years trying to make the best of.]]></description>
