Great Basin bristlecone pines have survived for over 5,000 years - individual trees that germinated when humans were inventing writing, that were already ancient when Rome was founded, that have watched empires rise and fall and rise again while they grew another millimeter. They look dead - twisted, bleached, mostly bark and exposed heartwood - but they're alive, adding a few cells each year, surviving on ridges so high and cold and dry that nothing else can compete with them. The secret to immortality, it turns out, is living where nothing wants to kill you.
