And yet a single one of these little wooden sheds on Dendy Street Beach sold for $450,000 in late 2023 - more than the price of a family home in much of regional Australia. The Brighton Bathing Boxes are among the most expensive square meters of timber in the country, and the reason is simple: there are only so many of them, they cannot be added to the historic row, and across the water rises the skyline of Melbourne. People do not buy a bathing box. They buy a place in a postcard.
