Bowen Falls: Introduction

Photo credit Bernard Spragg. NZ from Christchurch, New Zealand, CC0. For fifteen years, you could see Bowen Falls but you couldn't reach it. The walking track from Milford Sound wharf closed in 2002 after the rock face above it became unstable, and the tallest permanent waterfall in the fiord became a view-only attraction - visible from cruise boats gliding past but no longer a place you could stand beside and feel the spray. Then, in January 2018, a creative workaround appeared: a tiny on-demand boat service, just 120 metres long, that ferries walkers past the unstable section and deposits them at the base of 162 metres of falling water. The round trip takes half an hour, including both boat rides, and it remains one of Milford Sound's best-kept secrets.
