Archaeologist Dieter Noli, working as a contractor for De Beers, recognized the materials as centuries old and called in maritime archaeologist Bruno Werz. Together, they identified the remains of a Portuguese trading vessel that had vanished from history on a Friday afternoon in March 1533.
