      <description><![CDATA[A foxtrot called "Boegoeberg's Dam" was popular in the workers' camp during the early 1930s. The men who danced to it were not professional builders. They were unemployed South Africans recruited under a Great Depression make-work program, hauling concrete and laying stone in the Karoo heat for seven shillings and sixpence an hour, building a dam they hoped would deliver them farms, factories, and houses. Some wrote poetry about those hopes. The dam they built still stands on the Orange River near Prieska, and the canal it feeds still irrigates the land.]]></description>
