Black Mountain last erupted 118 to 125 million years ago, when dinosaurs still walked the Earth and the peak stood among a chain of volcanic islands that would eventually become part of Southern California's coastal ranges. Today, this extinct volcano rises from northern San Diego's sprawl, its slopes preserving both the ancient geology of the Santiago Peak Volcanics and the living ecosystems that have adapted to California's Mediterranean climate.
