Northwest California harbors one of the most diverse temperate coniferous forests on Earth, yet no trail connected its scattered wilderness areas into a coherent journey. In 2009, he proposed a solution: 360 miles of hiking from the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness to the Pacific Ocean at Crescent City. He called it the Bigfoot Trail, and he designed it to pass 32 species of conifers along the way. The route crosses six wilderness areas, one national park, and one state park, threading through a landscape that has served as both refuge and evolutionary laboratory for millions of years.
