Completely burnt during the South Sudanese civil war, the capital of Unity State had been reduced to ash and ruin. Yet Bentiu has not disappeared. Instead, it has become two places at once - a ransacked town slowly rebuilding on the southern bank of the Bahr el Ghazal River, and a vast displacement camp on its outskirts where, as of late 2023, between 100,000 and 160,000 people shelter from violence and flooding. Both are Bentiu. Neither tells the full story alone.
