In the north-western quadrant of KwaZulu-Natal, bounded by the Drakensberg mountains to the west and the Tugela and Buffalo rivers below, the nineteenth century played out in a series of battles that involved the Zulu kingdom, the Voortrekker settlers, and the British Empire. Blood River, Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, Spion Kop, Majuba: these names carry weight far beyond South Africa, and the landscapes where those engagements occurred are largely preserved, marked by memorials to the soldiers, warriors, and civilians who died on all sides.]]></description>
