Along the Kherlen River, he addressed Tengri, the eternal sky deity, asking for victory and vowing to avenge his ancestor Ambaghai, who had been crucified by the Jin dynasty's Emperor Xizong in 1146. The grudge was 65 years old. The army he assembled to settle it numbered 100,000 horsemen -- virtually the entire Mongol military force. Only about 2,000 men remained behind to guard the homeland. It was the kind of all-or-nothing commitment that either ends an empire or builds one.]]></description>
