By autumn the front had stabilized at the Hollandse Waterlinie, the deliberate flooding belt that protected the western cities. The country had survived. It had not yet fought back. On the night of 11 October a young William III of Orange led three columns out of the dark toward the small town of Woerden, occupied by the French and lightly garrisoned. The plan was simple, the execution sloppy, and the result a French tactical victory. But something else happened that night - something that mattered more than who held the town the next morning.]]></description>
