In between those terse exchanges lay a day of running battle through Arctic darkness, force-8 gales, and freezing spray -- a fight that killed 1,932 German sailors and ended the era of battleship warfare in European waters. The Battle of the North Cape, fought on December 26, 1943, was the penultimate engagement between battleships in history, surpassed only by the Battle of Surigao Strait ten months later. It was also a masterpiece of naval planning, intelligence, and nerve.
