It was spring 255 BC, and the Battle of the Bagradas River -- also known as the Battle of Tunis -- had just delivered Carthage's only major land victory of the entire First Punic War. Of the roughly 15,500 Romans who had marched out that morning, approximately 12,000 were killed and 500 more captured.]]></description>
