Travis wrote it on February 24, 1836, from inside a crumbling former Spanish mission, surrounded by 1,500 Mexican soldiers. Historian Mary Deborah Petite called it 'one of the masterpieces of American patriotism.' Copies spread across Texas, then the United States, then Europe. Travis was dead ten days later. But the letter had already done its work -- and so had the battle it described.]]></description>
