Aboard one of the Colombian vessels that morning rode two men who would later become presidents of Ecuador - which did not yet exist as a country. The war was three months old and would last another nine months. The battle lasted hours. It was the first real combat of the Peruvian Navy as an independent force, and nobody quite won.
