This limestone massif rising above the Venetian plain became the hinge on which the entire Italian front turned -- the place where the great Austro-Hungarian advance finally stopped, where the empire's last offensive failed, and where its army began the retreat that ended in dissolution. Three battles were fought here between November 1917 and October 1918, and together they tell the story of an empire's collapse.]]></description>
