In 640, barely two years after completing the conquest of Syria, Arab Muslim forces under the command of 'Amr ibn al-'As appeared on the outskirts of Heliopolis -- modern-day Ain Shams, a northeastern suburb of Cairo -- and met a Byzantine army that still believed itself the master of Egypt. By nightfall, that belief was finished. The Battle of Heliopolis, fought in the shadow of one of the ancient world's most sacred cities, did not merely decide a military contest. It decided the fate of an entire civilization's hold on the Nile.]]></description>
