Denmark insisted on it; the Austrians and Prussians said it was a draw, though their commander quietly accepted a promotion to rear admiral as if he'd done rather better than that. Historians have argued about it ever since. What is certain is that on the afternoon of 9 May 1864, in the southern North Sea off a tiny British-held island called Heligoland, four wooden warships passed each other at two thousand yards and unleashed broadsides into each other's flanks - and that this was the last time on Earth that squadrons of wooden ships ever fought a battle. Within a generation, iron and steel would make the entire scene impossible. The Battle of Heligoland was a closing door.
