The English commander Robert Bowes had walked into a trap his own spies had failed to find. Above 2,000 Englishmen died on the ridge that morning. Six hundred more, including Bowes himself, were marched off as prisoners. The Scots, by contemporary accounts, scarcely lost anyone worth counting.
