His fleets would feint toward the Caribbean, draw the Royal Navy out of position, then double back to sweep the English Channel clear for 150,000 troops waiting at Boulogne. It was an audacious gamble, and on July 22, 1805, off the fog-shrouded coast of Galicia, it began to unravel. The battle that followed satisfied neither side -- but its consequences reshaped Europe.
