According to the novelist Anthony Burgess, who lived in the area after the war, the signs read: Black Troops Only. The story may be embellished. Burgess was a memoirist of imaginative range and his version of the night that followed has been challenged by historians. But the spirit of it is correct. The Black GIs of the 1511th Quartermaster Truck Regiment were welcome in the village. Their own military police were not. And on the night of 24 June 1943, that tension turned into gunfire.
