The reconnaissance platoon of the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment pushed past the signs anyway. Their point man was the first to fall. Then First Lieutenant Richard A. Hill went forward to check on him and was mortally wounded. Within minutes, the platoon was pinned down, its commander dead, and only a radio operator's voice connected it to the battalion headquarters where Lieutenant Colonel Alexander M. Haig was trying to make sense of what was unfolding.]]></description>
