Known as the Golden Boy, the figure -- possibly Shiva, possibly a Khmer king -- had been unearthed by a villager in northeast Thailand decades earlier, smuggled out of the country, and displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for thirty years. Its homecoming marked a rare victory in Thailand's long campaign to recover looted antiquities, and it landed in exactly the right place: a museum whose own history is a story of collection, loss, and reclamation.
