The procession stretches so far that first-time visitors lose count before they reach the end. This is Bai Dinh, a Buddhist temple complex of such scale that it holds records across Vietnam and Southeast Asia -- and yet the place it grew from is a cluster of small caves on a mountainside where monks once chanted by candlelight. On Bai Dinh Mountain in Ninh Binh Province, about 90 kilometers south of Hanoi, the old and the new exist side by side: intimate devotion and monumental ambition, separated by 800 meters and several centuries of intent.
