Taken together, the sanctuary of Ayabaca becomes something more layered than any single English word captures: the Sanctuary of Death and of Immortality. It is a place where the rivers of a region originate and where, every October, tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive to meet a wooden figure of Christ called the Señor Cautivo - the Captive Lord.
