Photo credit Dnalor 01, CC BY-SA 3.0 at. In southern Poland, behind the infamous 'Arbeit Macht Frei' gate, lies the site of humanity's greatest crime. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest Nazi concentration camp, the epicenter of the Holocaust, the place where industrialized murder reached its terrible peak. Over 1.1 million people were killed here - 90% of them Jews - most in gas chambers within hours of arrival. The camp operated from 1940 to 1945, when Soviet forces liberated 7,000 surviving prisoners. Today, Auschwitz is a memorial and museum. Over 2 million people visit annually to witness what humans did to other humans, and to remember.
