Photo credit AlastairG, CC BY-SA 2.0. On 1 February 1993, the Assynt Crofters' Trust completed the purchase of the North Lochinver Estate for £300,000. The vendors were a liquidated Swedish property company; the buyers were the people who actually lived on the land - 13 crofting townships set up during the Highland Clearances and then sold over their heads, generation after generation, to whichever absentee owner had the deepest pockets that decade. The Assynt purchase was the first modern community land buyout in Scotland. Everything that followed - the Eigg buyout, the Harris North buyout, the long parade of community-owned estates across the Highlands and Islands - traces back to the meeting in a small hall on 6 June 1992 when a group of crofters decided they were finished being sold.
