Ashio Copper Mine: The Price of Progress in Japan's Mountains: Introduction

By the 1890s, farmers downstream from the Ashio Copper Mine were watching their fields turn barren after floods deposited contaminated silt across the valley floor. Sores appeared on the hands and feet of anyone who touched the tainted soil. Birth rates dropped. Premature deaths climbed. The mine responsible for all of it was simultaneously producing forty percent of Japan's copper, fueling the industrialization of an entire nation. Ashio became the place where Japan first learned that progress carries a price -- and that someone always pays it.
