A Costa's hummingbird hangs motionless inches from your face, wings beating eighty times per second, close enough that you feel the air tremble. This is what the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum does better than anywhere else: it erases the distance between humans and the natural world. Since 1952, this 98-acre institution west of Tucson has defied easy categorization. It is a zoo, an aquarium, a botanical garden, a natural history museum, and a publisher. Nearly 400,000 visitors annually discover that the Sonoran Desert is not the barren wasteland they imagined but what ecologists call 'the lushest desert on earth.'
