It described the way the Arfak tribes warmed their stilt houses by placing hot embers beneath the floor, a practical solution to nights that grow cold at nearly 3,000 meters above the equatorial sea. The name stuck to the mountains themselves, and today the Arfak range rises as one of the most biologically extraordinary places on Earth -- a wall of cloud forest on the Bird's Head Peninsula of West Papua where birds of paradise still perform courtship dances on stages they have cleared by claw, and where indigenous peoples speak languages found nowhere else.
