The world's most famous secret military installation sits on Groom Lake in Nevada, protected by sensors, guards, and signs promising lethal force - and by decades of government denial that it existed at all. The CIA didn't acknowledge Area 51 until 2013, by which time it had become a cultural phenomenon. UFO enthusiasts believed aliens were stored there; aviation enthusiasts knew the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, and stealth technology were developed there; conspiracy theorists made it the center of every theory. The truth is probably more interesting than aliens: a test facility where America developed aircraft so advanced that eyewitnesses literally couldn't believe they were human-made.
