They took the same route they had used on the way out. Roughly 300 Maoist fighters were waiting. The ambush that followed killed 76 CRPF policemen, making it the deadliest single attack by Naxalite-Maoist insurgents on Indian security forces. Eight Maoists also died. India's home minister, P. Chidambaram, would later say the forces appeared to have "walked into a trap," a clinical assessment that did little to capture the scale of what happened in the forests of Bastar that morning.]]></description>
