This Flemish city of 530,000 runs Europe's second largest port, dominates the world's diamond trade, and does it all with an air of quiet confidence. Rubens made his home here. The Spanish besieged it. World War II V-2 rockets devastated entire neighborhoods. Through every catastrophe, Antwerp rebuilt and pressed forward. Today, fashion designers trained at its academies show in Paris and Milan, container ships crowd the Scheldt, and diamond traders examine stones in hushed offices along Hoveniersstraat. Commerce and culture work in productive combination here - they always have.
