Flannery O'Connor wrote those words from Andalusia, a white-columned plantation house on 544 acres of rolling middle Georgia, and she was being characteristically wry. A great deal was going on -- she was producing some of the sharpest, strangest fiction in American literature, working slowly and deliberately from a room on the ground floor while lupus eroded her body and peacocks strutted across the red clay yard. She had not chosen this place. Disease had chosen it for her. But in the thirteen years she spent here, Andalusia became the landscape of her imagination, the soil from which her violent, grace-haunted stories grew.]]></description>
