A narrow neck of land — barely wide enough for a road — is all that holds the northern peninsula of Leihitu to the southern peninsula of Leitimur, while Ambon Bay cuts 20 kilometers inland between them. This geological near-miss created one of the finest natural harbors in eastern Indonesia, and that harbor created everything else: the Portuguese trading post, the Dutch fortress, the clove monopoly, the rebellions, the massacres, and eventually a modern city of nearly half a million people perched on the edge of the most biodiverse marine waters on Earth.]]></description>
