H. Auden travelled the world, but kept an Ordnance Survey map of Alston Moor pinned to the wall of his ramshackle shack on Fire Island in 1947. According to his brother John, Auden came to love Alston Moor more than any other place. He had grown up summering there, written poems about it in the 1920s, and never quite left it behind. The moor he loved is England at its highest and emptiest - most of the parish sits above 1,000 feet, the town of Alston at its centre is the highest market town in England, and the wind comes off Cross Fell with nothing in the way to slow it.
