Ajana sat at the end of the line, a railhead pushed north from Northampton into the dry pastoral fringe of Western Australia's Mid West, where the wheat paddocks thin out and the bush takes over. The station opened on 6 January 1913. The townsite was not formally declared until 26 November 1915, which tells you something about how these places were born: the railway arrived first, and the town followed, hoping the trains would bring lead, wool, and a reason to stay.
