Each carved balustrade step produces a distinct musical note when struck -- the "singing steps" of Darasuram, built in the 12th century and still resonant after nine hundred years. This is one of the Great Living Chola Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and while it is smaller than its celebrated siblings at Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, art historians consistently describe it as the most exquisite in detail. Where those temples overwhelm with scale, this one astonishes with precision.
