The afternoon was clear and the wind was light when Flight 6289 lifted off the runway at Tamanrasset, climbing over the ochre flatlands at the foot of the Hoggar Mountains. Onboard were ninety-seven passengers and six crew, most of them Algerians heading north for home, work, or a football match. Among them were fourteen young players from the club Mouloudia d'Adriane, traveling to Ghardaïa for a regional qualifier. Witnesses on the ground heard a heavy thump as the aircraft left the earth. Seconds later, the climb faltered. The deadliest air disaster on Algerian soil to that point was already underway, and it would be over in less than a minute.]]></description>
